Most people buying solar in Peshawar spend their time comparing panels. Panels are the easy part — they sit still, they have no moving parts, and a good panel will quietly work for decades.

The inverter is different. It switches thousands of times a second, it runs hot, it sits in dust and humidity, and it is the single component most likely to give you trouble. It is also where the real differences between a cheap system and a good one are hidden.

This guide walks through the four decisions that actually matter.

1. What size inverter do you need?

Your inverter is sized in kilowatts (kW), and it needs to handle two things: the solar panels you connect to it, and the loads you run at the same time.

A simple rule that works well in practice:

  • Add up the heavy things you might run together — air conditioners, water pump, fridge, iron, washing machine.
  • Air conditioners are the deciding factor for most homes. A 1.5-ton inverter AC draws roughly 1.2–1.5 kW while running, but more at start-up.
  • Leave headroom. An inverter running permanently at its limit runs hotter and ages faster.

In rough terms:

  • Up to about 5 kW — a modest home: fans, lights, TV, fridge, internet, maybe one AC.
  • 8 kW — most medium-to-large homes, comfortably running two or three ACs alongside normal household load.
  • 10 kW — heavier households, or homes with more air conditioning, a deep water pump, or a small commercial load.

2. Hybrid, on-grid or off-grid?

  • On-grid (daytime) — cheapest. Runs your loads from solar while the sun is out, exports the surplus. No battery, so no backup during load shedding.
  • Off-grid — solar and battery only, no grid connection. Rarely the right answer inside the city.
  • Hybrid — handles solar, battery and grid together. You get daytime savings *and* backup, and you can add batteries later.

For almost every home in Peshawar, hybrid is the right choice. Load shedding is a fact of life here, and a hybrid inverter means you are not choosing between saving money and keeping the lights on. It also keeps the door open for net metering and for adding lithium battery backup later without replacing the inverter.

3. What "3 MPPT" means, and why it matters here

MPPT stands for Maximum Power Point Tracking. It is the circuit that squeezes the most power out of your panels as sunlight changes through the day.

The number of MPPTs tells you how many independent groups of panels the inverter can manage.

This matters more in Peshawar than the specification sheet suggests, because very few rooftops here are one clean, unshaded rectangle. Roofs have water tanks, stairwells, parapet walls and neighbouring buildings. With a single MPPT, panels wired together drag each other down — shade one part of a string and the whole string drops. With three MPPTs, you can split panels across different roof faces and different orientations, and each group performs on its own.

If your roof is anything other than perfectly simple, multiple MPPTs will earn back their cost.

4. IP66 — the specification people skip

IP ratings describe how well a sealed enclosure keeps things out. Two digits: the first for solids, the second for water.

In IP66:

  • The first 6 means completely dust-tight — no dust ingress at all.
  • The second 6 means protected against powerful water jets from any direction.

Now think about where inverters actually live in Peshawar. Often a wall in a car porch, a covered side passage, a utility area — somewhere exposed to dust in summer, driving rain in monsoon, and serious heat. Dust is the quiet killer: it coats electronics, blocks cooling, and traps heat until components cook.

An indoor-rated inverter in that position is being asked to do a job it was never built for. An IP66 inverter is sealed against exactly those conditions, which is why we push it here rather than treating it as a luxury spec.

5. The warranty question almost nobody asks

Here is the one that costs people real money.

Two inverters can both advertise a "7-year warranty" and mean completely different things. The words that matter are replacement versus repair.

  • Repair warranty — your inverter fails, it goes away to a workshop, someone opens it, and eventually you get it back. You are without power in the meantime, and repair quality varies enormously.
  • Replacement warranty — your inverter fails, you get a different working unit. No workshop, no waiting on a technician's diagnosis.

When you are comparing quotes, ask one question: *"Is that a replacement warranty or a repair warranty, and for how many of those years?"* You will find the answer separates suppliers very quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bigger inverter always better?
No. An oversized inverter costs more up front and runs less efficiently at low load. Size it to your real loads with some headroom, not to the largest number you can afford.

Can I add batteries later?
With a hybrid inverter, yes — that is one of its main advantages. Plan the battery voltage in advance though; modern lithium packs are typically 51.2V. See our battery guide.

Does IP66 mean I can mount it in open rain?
It means the enclosure is sealed against dust and strong water jets. It is still sensible to mount any inverter out of direct sun and direct rainfall — shade keeps it cooler, and cooler electronics last longer.

What if my roof faces two different directions?
That is exactly the case where multiple MPPTs help. Each group of panels is tracked separately instead of being dragged down to the weakest one.
