Why a Solar System Underperforms: Installation Quality, Maintenance and Winter Output
You can buy the best panels and the best inverter available in Pakistan and still lose 10–20% of your power. Not to a fault, and not to a warranty claim — to decisions made on the roof during the two days your system was installed, and to a handful of small things afterwards.
Solar is not really a product. It is an installation. The same equipment, put up two different ways, gives two different bills.
Five installation mistakes that quietly cost you power
1. Wrong tilt and orientation. Panels at the wrong angle, or facing the wrong way, generate less every single day for twenty-five years. It is invisible — nothing looks broken — which is exactly why it persists.
2. Shading treated as a detail. A small shadow from a water tank, a parapet, a tree or a pole can pull down an entire string of panels, not just the panel it touches. A good installer walks the roof at different times of day before deciding the layout. Shading is the single most common reason a system misses the output it was quoted.
3. Undersized or cheap cabling. Thin wire loses power as heat, and heat is also how electrical fires start. Correct cable sizing protects both your output and your house, and it is invisible from the ground — which makes it a favourite place to cut cost.
4. A weak mounting structure. A rust-prone or under-braced structure survives its first year and fails in a storm, usually taking panels with it. In windy areas this is genuinely not the place to save money.
5. Mismatched components. An excellent panel array behind an undersized inverter, or a battery running on wrong charge settings, wastes the potential of everything else you bought. The system is only as good as its worst-matched part.
The common thread is that none of these show up on the day. The system switches on, everything looks fine, and you simply never receive the output you paid for.

The maintenance list — genuinely short
Solar needs very little upkeep. No fuel, no moving parts. But a few habits keep a system at its peak for 25+ years:
- Clean the panels. Dust, pollen and bird droppings block light. In dusty areas a gentle rinse every few weeks is enough. Early morning is best — never spray cold water on hot glass in the afternoon.
- Re-check shading once a year. Trees grow. Neighbours build. The shade-free roof you started with may not be shade-free in year three.
- Watch your production. A sudden drop in your app or your bill is the earliest warning you will get that something needs attention.
- Inspect wiring and mounting annually. Loose connections, rust, storm damage — ideally with a technician.
- Keep the inverter ventilated. Do not stack things against it, do not box it in, keep it out of direct afternoon sun. Inverters fail from heat more than anything else.
- Look after the batteries. Keep them cool and avoid running them flat. This alone adds years of life. There is more detail in our guide to testing your battery's real backup.
That is close to the whole list. When a system does underperform, the cause is almost always dirt, new shading, or the original installation — very rarely the panels themselves.
What really happens in winter and on cloudy days
A common worry before buying, and the honest answer is reassuring but not unlimited.
On cloudy days panels keep generating from diffused light — typically 10–40% of a clear day, depending on how heavy the cloud is. You are never at zero during daylight hours.
In winter the days are shorter, so total daily production falls. But the panels themselves are *more* efficient in cool weather, not less. Panels lose efficiency in extreme heat, which is why a cold bright January morning can outperform what people expect. Planning for the seasons instead of hoping
- Size for the year, not for one perfect June afternoon. A quote built on best-case output is a quote designed to disappoint you in December.

So yes — solar works here all year. A cloudy week or a short winter does not undo the savings you make across the other ten months. What does undo them is a careless installation, and that is worth being fussy about.
