Do Solar Panels Work in Winter and Cloudy Weather?
A common worry before going solar: what happens in winter or on cloudy days? The good news — solar panels still work, just at reduced output.
What actually happens:
• Cloudy days — panels still generate from diffused sunlight, usually 10-40% of a sunny day depending on cloud thickness. You are never at zero during daylight.
• Winter — days are shorter, so total daily production drops. But panels are actually more efficient in cooler temperatures; they lose efficiency in extreme heat, not cold.
• Peshawar and KPK — our region gets strong sunshine most of the year, so annual production is excellent.
How to plan for it:
• Size for the year, not one perfect day — a good installer accounts for seasonal variation.
• Hybrid systems with battery backup carry you through low-production days and outages.
• On-grid net metering banks your summer surplus to offset winter — the grid acts like a giant battery.
So yes, solar makes sense in Pakistan year-round. The occasional cloudy day or shorter winter does not undo the huge savings you get across the year.
